How Do I Choose Paint Colors for My House?

Whether you’re hiring a professional painting company or planning to do it yourself, one mistake you are sure you don’t want to make is choosing the wrong paint color.

In our professional experience we have found it’s best to consider the:

  • Ambiance & Energy – What do you want to feel from each room?  Do you prefer a calm blue for the bedroom? Or a vibrant yellow for the kitchen?
  • Lighting – A major factor for determining the right paint color for your home is first understanding how the light will affect it.  Consider both natural light and artificial light that will shine on the paint throughout the day.  We recommend testing either a small amount of the color or a color swatch in all lighting before making your choice.
  • Matching Existing Style – Consider the furniture, flooring, and decorations that you have in your room before committing to a paint color.
  • Type of Home – What style of home do you have?  Victorian style?  Beach home?  Townhome?  Cabin?  The type of home you have allows you to consider some standard recommendations.  For example, The Victorian Emporium states that “typically, houses decorated in the Victorian era used strong, deep colour schemes such as blues, greens, reds, and yellows.”

What Paint Colors Are Popular in 2023?

In our experience we saw some very common trends as we kicked off the year.  As discussed in our kitchen cabinet colors blog, we saw many off whites and lighter colors being selected for kitchen cabinets and have come across some unique trends for home colors in 2023 as well.

As we look to leaders in the industry let’s take a look at top color options:

  1. Sherwin Williams 2023 Color Of The Year is Redend Point. An option that is said to pair well with other warm, earthy hues.
  2. Dunn-Edwards unveiled its 2023 Color of the year winner, Terra Rosa.  Defined as a deep, rosy pink hue with a touch  of terra-cotta influence.
  3. Valspar lists 12 different colors for their 2023 list.  A couple of our favorites are Blue Arrow and Green Trellis

There are plenty of alternative paint color options.  Explore to find what appeals to you best and then give it a test.

Is It Better To Paint The Whole House The Same Color?

Whether it is better to paint your house the same color or not is all based on personal preference.

When hiring a professional painter, you shouldn’t limit the options to just one color, unless you are looking for a uniform look throughout the house.  If you are considering painting yourself, then there are some cost and efficiency advantages of going with one color.

Before you decide to paint your house one color, you should consider that:

  • The single color could be boring
  • Unique decorations and settings for rooms may not work as well with a single color
  • It wouldn’t bring out much of your personal style

A single color works really well when complemented with the architecture and furniture of the home.  Remember to pick what works best for you and to test some options before fully committing to painting your home a single color.

Should I Choose A Lighter or Darker Option to Paint My House?

When selecting between a lighter or darker coat of paint, there are many factors that come into play such as:

  • Personal Preference
  • Architecture/Style
  • Location/Climate
  • Lighting

Some of the positive considerations for a lighter paint option include:

  • Natural light will move around the space, creating the illusion that the space is larger
  • Many of our San Diego clients have expressed a feeling of calmness with light color options
  • Lighter colors are generally great at keeping homes cooler and more energy-efficient

For darker shades the pros include:

  • Depth and sophistication can be captured when painting your house a darker color
  • For any problem areas or imperfections, darker colors can help to mask the issues
  • Our most common complements of a darker color include the cozy and inviting atmosphere.

So... What's the Right Color of Paint for My House?

There’s no right answer.  Though there is a science to perfecting the work, the craft itself is an art form and requires your own personal taste and style to be the ultimate decider.

Hopefully this piece was helpful in providing you with the right items for consideration as you look to tackle your next home painting project.
