Some of the most common questions we hear while on our metal painting projects include:

The type of paint used while painting metal will vary specifically depending on what exact type of metal the surface is as well as your desired outcome.  For example Oil-based paint can is a popular option to paint metal, but it does take longer to dry and can be difficult to clean.  Acrylic paint is another popular option that dries quickly and offers strong adhesion.

Before applying the paint you’ll want to make sure that you’ve applied a coat of primer to help prevent rust and to act as a bonding agent between the metal and the paint.  Be sure to use a primer that is compatible to both the metal and the paint being used.

The best way to paint metal will vary dependent on the specific type of metal, but some general steps to follow are:

  1. Preparing the surface by cleaning it of any dirt and grime and breaking off any rust or oil with sandpaper and/or a wire brush.
  2. Apply a coat of primer to bond the paint and the metal together.
  3. Apply your chosen paint through your preferred method of application.  You can use a brush, roller, or spray gun.  A spray gun is typically your best option to spray thin even coats of paint if you have one available and have the professional expertise required to use it.
  4. Give the paint time to dry and once fully dried you will need to consider whether or not a topcoat is required.
  5. Now that everything is freshly painted and dried up, your last step is to clean up and enjoy the newly painted metal

Yes, of course you can paint metal and our team would be happy to provide professional assistance on your next metal painting project.

Yes, it is a generally best practice to sand any metal surface prior to painting.  The type of metal will determine the type of sand paper required.  Sanding the metal will help to remove any existing paint, rust, or anything else stuck on the surface while also allowing the paint to adhere better.
